Summary

In 'The Maverick Soul', Miv Watts opens the doors to twenty-five authentic bohemian homes, occupied by some of the world's most inspirational free spirits。 From artists and musicians, to writers, actors, stylists, farmers and more, this is a collection of people who have the courage to live life on their own terms, and are comfortable in their own skin。

From Paris to London, Sydney to New York and various other places across the globe, subjects include Marianne Faithfull, Simon Finch, Wendy Whiteley, Griffin Dunne, Linda Rodin and more。

No one person is a reproduction of another; each of us is unique, shaped by the diversities of our own individual layers, and this book is a celebration of just that。

A bit of a disappointment。 With one or two exceptions it was all UK/Australian persons - not one person of color。 And the print format was small and condensed making it difficult to read。

Trish

A neat book。

Marvelous。 “They are the free spirits。 They are the ones who lived like kings while the soles of their shoes were letting in water。 These are the Maverick Souls。”These people have chosen to live apart from the western consumerist culture in which they found themselves。 To the reviewer below: this is why there are no eccentrics here striking out from within their own Asian and African cultures。 That’s another subject worthy of its own book。The subjects are older because the authors want to show t Marvelous。 “They are the free spirits。 They are the ones who lived like kings while the soles of their shoes were letting in water。 These are the Maverick Souls。”These people have chosen to live apart from the western consumerist culture in which they found themselves。 To the reviewer below: this is why there are no eccentrics here striking out from within their own Asian and African cultures。 That’s another subject worthy of its own book。The subjects are older because the authors want to show the rich layers of life that have accumulated in their homes through the decades。 Not something that was bought last week and reflects who the new owner was last Tuesday。 。。。more

What a gorgeous book! So inspiring -- hopefully this inspiration will continue throughout this shiny, new year。

There's no place like home。The individuals chronicled in this book can speak these words truly。Within its introduction the author, Miv Watts, discusses what is The Maverick Soul: "a patchwork of a life lived to the full in every aspect。。。 The people I have chosen for this book have inspired me for their courage to live outside what is perceived to be the empire of mass culture。。。 This book is about people and the layers to a life" and explains "It has always been a passion of mine to explore the There's no place like home。The individuals chronicled in this book can speak these words truly。Within its introduction the author, Miv Watts, discusses what is The Maverick Soul: "a patchwork of a life lived to the full in every aspect。。。 The people I have chosen for this book have inspired me for their courage to live outside what is perceived to be the empire of mass culture。。。 This book is about people and the layers to a life" and explains "It has always been a passion of mine to explore the reasons why people surround themselves with the things they do。"Beautifully written by Miv Watts, photographed by Hugh Stewart, the book has the wonderful crafted physicality of a big, solid, hardcover tome that despite its attractive cover, existence as a coffee table book merely for show is contraindicated。 It should be kept at hand, regularly dipped into for respite from the real world and repeatedly studied for hours of #maximalism therapy。 The last sentence from the introduction is perhaps why I immediately fell deeply in love with this book。 I offer it to you for consideration。。。 "There is not enough time left in this world to be anything but authentic。 Bon voyage。" 。。。more

Not what I expected。

A wonderful read, full of some great photography of the homes belonging to some amazingly interesting people。 They're not quite in the eccentric category but all strikingly individual and I loved getting a little peek inside their doors! This book is joyful, inspiring and beautifully photographed but it’s a real shame everyone featured is white and from a pretty narrow range of ages and social classes。 Almost all of them have something brought back from an ‘adventure’ in Africa or Asia, where are the houses of those who live in these continents? Eclectic, bohemian style is not the preserve of white, upper middle class westerners。

Too many septuagenarian Australians nobody cares about。 Uninspiring

The thing that differentiates a good house design book from a great one is the way the creators capture the heart and soul of the home。 This book is part biography and part home expression and it beautifully explores the connection between home and home owner。 I highly recommend it。

I sometimes spend years waiting for a book like this。 In the fourteen years I've been voraciously reading interior design books (beginning when I was thirteen or fourteen years old, and having only a meager income from babysitting, dutifully filled out the forms to request the public library's purchase of all the books I could not afford), the majority of them, even if nice for a look through, forgettable and indiguishable from the next。 My favorite are not only of eclectic, lived-in spaces, but I sometimes spend years waiting for a book like this。 In the fourteen years I've been voraciously reading interior design books (beginning when I was thirteen or fourteen years old, and having only a meager income from babysitting, dutifully filled out the forms to request the public library's purchase of all the books I could not afford), the majority of them, even if nice for a look through, forgettable and indiguishable from the next。 My favorite are not only of eclectic, lived-in spaces, but ones that focus on revealing interesting things about the people that live in them, and not some tired trope of how-to decorate。 This book does both。 I love that there are spaces in here, with elements that would be considered "outdated" and not "photo ready" but that reflect the personality of the owner。 In one bedroom, there is un-aesthetically pleasing pile of mail on the table。 In another the aged, pink carpet has gaping holes from where it has been worn through to the floorboards。 A mountain of books piled over half a bed (so no one is tempted to sit there, the owner admits, ha)。 Extension cords snake around the floor。 These photos show the idiosyncrasies of life, which gives more inspiration than homes gone over with a fine-toothed comb and that are entirely unobtainable in their gleaming, state-of-the-art perfection。 And the people (and the text written about them) is not only readable, but engaging in a way where most interior design books fail。 Definitely a book I will—and have already—gone back to again and again。 。。。more

I loved this gorgeous eccentric bohemian book。 The fact that it was written by Naomi Watts's mother is beside the point。 Miv Watts, herself, is a gorgeous eccentric bohemian and she has showcased a menagerie of her friends and acquaintances who also fit into that genre。 The photographs are wonderful and eccentric in their own right and I found so many hidden secrets behind curtains, obscured by a picture frame on a dressing table, a random book lying on a table。 I had to look up some of the name I loved this gorgeous eccentric bohemian book。 The fact that it was written by Naomi Watts's mother is beside the point。 Miv Watts, herself, is a gorgeous eccentric bohemian and she has showcased a menagerie of her friends and acquaintances who also fit into that genre。 The photographs are wonderful and eccentric in their own right and I found so many hidden secrets behind curtains, obscured by a picture frame on a dressing table, a random book lying on a table。 I had to look up some of the names, books and artists that were lurking in the corners of the images only to extend my learning to another dimension beyond the pages。 I will revisit this book again and have it by my bedside for a long time to come。 。。。more

Looking for inspiration - Great design book。

This is a fabulous, inspiring, unique book。 I absolutely loved it and refer to it often for inspiration。 The only reason I gave it four stars rather than five is because I would have adored photographs which were better lit so that I could see every tiny detail of these artistic, eccentric people。We have, so largely in this country, lost our appreciation for the eccentric。 Rather than disparage those of us who appear "different," we should celebrate the artistic and creative among us。That is why This is a fabulous, inspiring, unique book。 I absolutely loved it and refer to it often for inspiration。 The only reason I gave it four stars rather than five is because I would have adored photographs which were better lit so that I could see every tiny detail of these artistic, eccentric people。We have, so largely in this country, lost our appreciation for the eccentric。 Rather than disparage those of us who appear "different," we should celebrate the artistic and creative among us。That is why this book is so inspiring to me。 To see other bohemian, artistic and unusual people who do their own things in spite of society's desire to make us all beige, is so uplifting and stimulating for me that I refer to this book often in order to validate my own eccentricities。 I dream of a time that we will not need validation or support for our own "weirdness。"If you live within a beige life and wish to remain there, this book is not for you。 If, however, you wish to perhaps spark your own creativity or validate that which is eccentric and creative within you, then definitely buy this book。 You will not fail to be inspired by others of your tribe。 。。。more

Gorgeous book full of unique homes and their owners。

Beautiful photographs showing the homes of some wonderful eccentric and brilliant creators。 Very artsy and fun interiors! Author, Miv Watts, who is a interior decorator, does a fine job showcasing these unusual homes。
